BURRELL BACKS MEN’S FOOTBALL TEAM TO OVERCOME ECONOMIC OBSTACLES—02/03/15
Horace Burrell, the head of Jamaica’s football, said he is backing the men’s team in order to overcome the nation’s economic challenges and to ensure the team makes it mark in the international sport. According to Burrell, Jamaica is like other Caribbean nations in that it faces problems financing the preparations required to compete in major tournaments.
UMPIRES ASSOCIATION RE-ELECTS MALCOLM—02/04/15
The Jamaica Cricket Umpires Association (JCUA) has again elected Norman Malcolm to be its president. Malcolm resigned from the West Indies Panel of Umpires in recent times. He ran for the organization’s top spot unopposed at its general meeting. Malcolm, 59, stood in seven Twenty20s and 27 one-day internationals. He said he plans to finish the work he began in 2002.
JAMAICAN WINS GOLD IN FENCING—02/05/15
Jamaican Tia Simms-Lymn, 15, won the gold medal at the Cadet Junior Pan-American Fencing Championships in Toronto, Canada. Some 20 nations from the region are competing at the event. Simms-Lymn took the top spot with a score of 11-9 to become the first female Jamaican to win a championship in fencing at the Pan-American tournament. She is now at second place in the rankings in Great Britain where she lives with her parents.
BOLT TO APPEAR AT CAMPERDOWN CLASSIC—02/06/15
Jamaican sprint champion Usain Bolt is expected to make his first 2015 appearance at the Camperdown Classic at National Stadium on February 14. The organizers of the event are connected with the Racers Track Club, which is headed by Bolt. They announced that Bold and his club mates will all compete, unless they are injured or have other unavoidable commitments.
