The organizers of Jamaica’s 50 th Anniversary celebration in Atlanta, unveils the official website today. The launch which is expected to give access to millions of Jamaican’s worldwide, will allow them to see the many activities which are being arranged by the Jamaica 50 th -Atlanta Planning Committee, Inc. in celebration of Jamaica’s independence. These activities will give Jamaicans in Georgia and the surrounding states an opportunity to actively participate in the celebration of Jamaica’s Golden Jubilee.

Here are some of the Core events sponsored by the Committee:
May 12 – Sports Day. The venue for this activity is Burdett Park, in College Park, Georgia. Activities will include cricket, dominoes, soccer, netball and other activities for the whole family
May 26 – Memorial Day Weekend, Caribbean Carnival in Atlanta – Jamaica will have a band of reveler’s in this annual Carnival celebrations organized by Reggalypso. The theme for this event is “Doing it One More Time.”
June 3 – Georgia Caribbean-American Heritage Coalition. The countries of Jamaica and Trinidad and Tobago, both of which are celebrating their 50th Anniversary this year, will be the featured countries at the opening ceremony of the Georgia Caribbean Heritage Coalition’s month long celebrations. The venue for this activity will be the Fulton County Atrium – 141 Pryor Street, Atlanta, Georgia, 30303
August 4 – Jamaica Day will see Jamaican’s from throughout the Southeastern United States combine in a family fun extravaganza. Music will be provided by well-know Jamaican artists. There will also be games for children, vending and a taste of Jamaican culture throughout the day. The venue for this event will be announced in the near future
August 5 – An Ecumenical and Thanksgiving Service will start the actual week of Jamaica’s Independence. with a service of praise and blessing. This year’s featured guest speaker is the Hon. Ronald Thwaites, Esq., Jamaica’s Minister of Education.
August 6 – Flag Raising Ceremony. Jamaican’s will participate in a Flag Raising Ceremony at Atlanta’s City Hall, 55 Trinity Street, Atlanta, Georgia 30303.
August 18 – Independence Ball will be hosted by the Atlanta-Jamaican Association. Venue for this event is Georgia International Convention Center, East Point, Georgia. Featured speaker will be a prominent Jamaican personality.
October 27 – Heroes Day event to commemorate Jamaica’s National Heroes at a venue to be determined.
Additional activities that are being scheduled include a performance by the National Dance Theatre Company of Jamaica and a featured play produced by one of Jamaica’s foremost playwrights, Mr. Basil Dawkins. The dates, times and further details for these two activities will follow.
