jamarch“Ghosts” walked the halls at the Jamaican Embassy in Washington D.C. on Wednesday evening, February 6, as acclaimed Jamaican author Professor Curdella Forbes launched her latest literary work to rave reviews.
Professor Forbes, a professor of Caribbean literature at Howard University, regaled the appreciative and enthusiastic audience with excerpts from the book, which is set in the futuristic island of Jacaranda.
“Ghosts” tells the story of a forbidden love affair and its tragic consequences. Written in a mix of English and Jamaican Creole, the book is a haunting sequence of narratives that tells a compelling tale of murder, psychological mayhem, and love, while gleaming with Caribbean spirituality.
Ambassador Stephen Vasciannie, said the Embassy is honoured to be associated with the launch of Professor Forbes’ latest work, “as part of our ongoing Jamaica 50 Lecture Series sponsored by the Jamaica National Building Society.”
Others in attendance were Assistant Attorney General, District of Columbia, Donnette Cooper; Deputy Chief of Mission, Marsha Coore-Lobban; and Assistant Professor of English at the Massachusetts-based College of the Holy Cross, Dr. Jarrett Brown, who was the guest speaker.
Other works by Professor Forbes include Songs of Silence; Flying with Icarus and Other Stories; A Permanent Freedom; andFrom Nation toDiaspora: Samuel Selvon, George Lamming and the Cultural Performance of Gender.
Professor Forbes is a former Senior Lecturer in Literatures in English at the University of the West Indies Mona Campus.
