Immediately following the hurricane the Food for the Poor’s staff in Jamaica have been in the field assessing the needs. The eastern side of the island (especially St. Thomas, Portland and St. Mary…along with some areas of St. Catherine and St. Ann) has taken a great hit.
“The message is that the island was hit worse than originally believed, that even though news reports now have moved on to the forward path of this very dangerous storm, the people of Jamaica are in a dire situation and need help. Relief items are being distributed, but the most urgent need now is for cash donations so that food supplies can be replenished, and there will be an immense need for home building funds going forward to get people into safe homes and prevent any more deaths from landslides.”
We therefore appeal to the Jamaican Diaspora – communities, organizations, businesses and individuals in this Southern, USA region, to make monetary donations in the form of checks or money order made payable to:
