The Consulate General of Jamaica presented a donation of $500 to the Food For the Poor, for their relief efforts in Haiti.

Food For The Poor’s President/CEO, Robin Mahfood, accepted the gift from Consul General Sandra Grant-Griffiths at the Agency headquarters in Coconut Creek, South Florida. Following their meeting, Mahfood gave the Consul General, whose jurisdiction includes 15 states in the southern portion of the United States and the Bahamas, a personal tour of the nonprofit’s headquarters including its warehouse facilities.  

“We are fortunate to receive this donation from the Consulate of Jamaica,” said Mahfood. “I commend all those that donated to our brothers and sisters in Haiti who are in such great need. This gift will assist us to rebuild Haiti, and continue constructing homes for the poor there and schools for the children. ”

Grant-Griffiths said the donations from the public were collected in the lobby of their offices in downtown Miami. The Consulate matched 100 percent of the collection and asked for the entire donation to be designated to support those suffering from the earthquake and its aftermath.

“We set up the collection immediately after the earthquake so that we could assist the people who are suffering in that devastated country,” said Grant-Griffiths. “We are also encouraging our communities at large to channel their help and focus their efforts for Haiti through Food For The Poor.”

Food For The Poor has served in Haiti since 1986, and the organization currently supports more than 200 projects already underway in Haiti. Immediately after the earthquake, 150 members of the Jamaica Defense Force assisted the agency by providing security for their warehouse in Port-au-Prince, and guarding supplies so that food and medical aid could be delivered safely to those who needed it most.  

Food For The Poor, the largest international relief and development organization in the United States, does much more than feed millions of hungry poor in 17 countries of the Caribbean and Latin America. This interdenominational Christian agency provides emergency relief assistance, clean water, medicines, educational materials, homes, support for orphans and the aged, skills training and micro-enterprise development assistance, with more than 96 percent of all donations going directly to programs that help the poor.
