Renowned Jamaican drummer, Mr. William Stewart, will perform with 60 students from local schools in Miramar, South Florida, at a musical presentation called ‘Rhythms of Africa, Music Around the World’, on Saturday, February 27.

The concert, under the patronage of the Consulate General of Jamaica, will be staged at the 800-seat Miramar Cultural Centre in South Broward, and will climax Black History Month activities at the venue.

Mr. Stewart told JIS News that his mission is to use music as an art form for education, team building and stress reduction, and ultimately to work with the children. “This is my chance to give back to the children,” he added.

After 23 years with the international reggae band, Third World, Mr. Stewart has become a drum instructor and drum therapist while pursuing his passion for teaching. He continues to work with school children, teaching the history and art of drumming.

Recently, Mr. Stewart took his technique centre stage, when he held a drumming workshop with students at the Broward Centre for Performing Arts (BCPA), in downtown Fort Lauderdale. The students from 8 to 14 years of age, were from Parkway Middle School and Winston Park Elementary.

The BCPA and Broward County schools recently established ‘Arts Inspires..’, an educational workshop that introduces students to the arts, giving them an opportunity to work with internationally famed performing artistes.
