Description of the event and/or Author Bio: Diana McCaulay will be reading from her debut novel Dog-Heart. Published by Peepal Tree Press, Dog-Heart tells the story of the well-meaning attempts of a middle class single mother to transform the life of an inner city boy. Set in present day urban Jamaica, the novel unfolds in the alternating voices of the woman and the boy, speaking in the two languages of Jamaica. While engaging the reader in a tense and absorbing narrative, the novel deals seriously with issues of race and class, the complexities of relationships between people of very different backgrounds, and the difficulties faced by individuals seeking to bring about social change by their own actions. Dog-Heart won the Jamaica Cultural Development Commission’s 2008 National Creative Writing Competition in 2008
