Genres such as Reggae, Calypso, and Merengue to name a few are originated in The Caribbean. These genres have provided us with music that has the power to uplift the spirits over the years. Trinbagonian musician Kalpee recently hosted a Zoom Listening Party for his EP entitled ‘Feel Good Playlist Vol. 1’. The EP as the name suggests has the power to change the mood of those who listen, to feel ‘love’ and ‘light’.
‘Feel Good Playlist Vol. 1’ features 5 tracks that fuse the Caribbean sounds of Reggae and Calypso with contemporary R&B and Pop. The EP features tracks such as ‘Gimme De Ting’ featuring platinum-selling artiste Stefflon Don; ‘Put A Record On’ paying homage to Bob Marley’s hit single ‘Three Little Birds’; ‘Climb’ featuring the talented Freetown Collective; and fan favourites ‘Water Flowing’ and ‘Runaway’. Kalpee said, “Feel Good Playlist Vol 1 is intended to do just what it says in the title: make people feel good. It’s what, I like to call ‘Chilled Calypso’ which is music that you could easily head bop too, but still make you feel to take a drive down North Coast Road in Trinidad on an evening at sunset time”.
Kalpee who is described by COMPLEX UK as the “Artist to watch from Trinidad and Tobago” worked alongside Grammy Award-winning producers and writers such as Carla Marie Williams who has worked with the likes of Beyonce, Britney Spears, Rudimental, and Sean Paul; Yei Gonzales who has worked with Dip Lo, Cardi B and DJ Khalid, and Santiago Rodriguez who has worked with Little Mix and Pit Bull to name a few. “It was created with the help of some amazing producers, writers, and other artist too, and collectively combines my musical heritage of Calypso and Soca with the music that has inspired me growing up, including rock, pop, and reggae. I am grateful for all those involved especially The Anmls, Tano, Carla Marie Williams, Santiago Rodriguez, Stefflon Don, and my fellow Trini’s Freetown Collective. I’m excited to share it” added Kalpee.
Off the EP, Kalpee’s collaboration ‘Gimme De Ting’ with Stefflon Don has been receiving support locally and internationally with DJ Target and DJ Ace from BBC 1XTRA taking the lead. Kalpee is now gearing up to release the video for ‘Put A Record On’ and will begin his Caribbean promotional runs digitally this coming week.
