Mavis Hawthorne Memorial Scholarship Essay Competition By Golden Krust Caribbean Bakery – $2000 Award

Invitation to Participants
Golden Krust Caribbean Bakery invites graduating high school seniors to participate in the Mavis Hawthorne Memorial Essay Competition. The deadline for submission of all applications is July 2, 2006.

The Mavis Hawthorne Memorial Scholarship is awarded annually in memory of the matriarch of the Hawthorne family, who owned and operated Hawthorne & Sons Bakery out of which evolved Golden Krust Caribbean Bakery & Grill. Golden Krust is a bakery/restaurant franchise featuring a Caribbean menu. The company operates over 70 locations in New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Pennsylvania, Georgia and Florida.
The award will be in the amount of $ 2,000.00

Eligibility requirements
The competition is open to students who will graduate from high school in Spring 2006 and who:

1. By the scholarship deadline have been or will be accepted to pursue a course of study at an accredited college or university leading to a two-year or four-year degree;
2. Have been involved in activities within their community.

The application must be accompanied by a letter of recommendation from a member of the community, a high school teacher or a school administrator. It must be submitted in a sealed envelope, on letterhead where appropriate, and should bear the name and telephone number of the referee. Applications submitted without the accompanying recommendation will not be considered.

Essay Topics
Applicants must write a 750-word essay on one of the following subjects:
1. My immigrant experience in the United States;
2. How I will use the skills I acquire in my tertiary education to benefit my community;

The essay must be typed and double-spaced on 8 ½ x 11 paper.

Deadline for Submission
Entries must be submitted by July 2, 2006, and must be accompanied by a separate sheet of paper stating your name, home address and telephone number, and the high school from which you graduated.

A panel of judges will choose the winner based on the strength of his/her essay, community involvement and the recommendation.

The winner will be notified by mail. The decision of the judges is final. The winning essay will become the property of Golden Krust Caribbean Bakery. The winner will be required to sign a release giving Golden Krust Caribbean Bakery the sole permission to use his/her photographs and essays for publicity purposes.
