Veronica Campbell set for 99th Millrose Games – Will face Lauryn Williams; Trammell goes for double
NEW YORK (Jan. 12) – Setting up a rematch between two of the world’s top sprinters, Jamaican superstar Veronica Campbell has joined the women’s 60-meter field for the 99th Millrose Games, organizers announced today. Campbell, a 2004 double Olympic gold medalist, will go up against her biggest rival, USA sprint sensation Lauryn Williams, the 2005 World Champion at 100 meters and Olympic silver medalist.
With just a year to go before its centennial running, the 99th annual Millrose Games is set for Feb. 3 in Madison Square Garden. The most historic indoor track event in the world and the longest continuing sporting event held in Madison Square Garden, the Millrose Games is the second stop in USATF’s Visa Championship Series.
Campbell, 23, was the #1 female track-and-field athlete at the 2004 Olympics, winning two gold medals (200 meters, 4×100-meter relay) and a bronze (100 meters) on her way to being named 2004 Sportswoman of the Year in Jamaica. The winning time of 22.05 in her 200m victory in Athens was the fastest in the world for 2004, and no woman has run faster in the last five years. At the 2005 World Championships, Campbell took silver at 100 meters, second only to Williams.
On the men’s side, the USA’s Terrence Trammell will attempt the 60-meter sprint/hurdle double. Trammell, the 2000 and 2004 Olympic silver medalist at the 110-meter hurdles and 2001 World Indoor gold medalist, could be the first athlete, male or female, to win both events in the same year in the 99-year history of the meet. The 2001
Millrose 60-meter hurdles champion, Trammell barely missed the double in 2003 when he won the 60-meter dash but was second in the hurdles.
In the dash, Trammell will go up against Shawn Crawford, the 2004 Olympic gold medalist at 200 meters and silver medalist in the 4×100-meter relay. Also the 2004 World Indoor silver medalist at 60 meters, Crawford won the Millrose Games dash in 2002.
