MIDEM celebrates 40 years and Jamaica will be there…

Jamaica will be one of 92 countries to participate in the 40th edition of MIDEM to be held in France, January 22 to 26, 2006. The Jamaica Promotions Corporation (JAMPRO) will undertake the task of facilitating the participation and attendance of Jamaican music industry persons and companies.

MIDEM, scheduled for Cannes, France, is the largest music trade show and attracts independent and major record companies. It is also an event where music publishers, online and traditional distributors, live music professionals, A&R executives, agents, producers, promoters, import/exporters, manufacturers, service companies, retailers, attorneys and rights organizations come to seek new ways to promote and publicise music.

A top feature of the 40th anniversary edition will be the presence of the EMI Group. EMI is the world’s biggest independent music company operating directly in 50 countries. EMI Music represents more than 1,000 outstanding artists of all kinds of music. Among its record labels are: Angel, Astralwerks, Blue Note, Capitol, Capitol Nashville, EMI Classics, EMI CMG, EMI Records, EMI Televisa Music, Manhattan, Mute, Parlophone, and Virgin.

Starbucks Entertainment, France Telecom and Nokia are three other major firms who will be present to look at digital opportunities for independent companies, the latest business models, among other topics.

A release from MIDEM says “They’ll discover new sounds and services, explore business opportunities, learn about tomorrow’s industry, make deals, enjoy live music and party.” Preliminary information from the organizers is showing that over 9,000 music professionals will also be in attendance.

Jamaica will be represented at MIDEM through the ‘Sounds of Jamaica’ group national stand. The stand will accommodate Jamaican companies’ direct participation as well as support marketing of products for persons who are unable to attend the expo. Up to 50% of participants’ expenses will be covered by JAMPRO.
