Raven teams up with Montreal reggae and hip-hop artiste Jonathan Emile to release a remix of her most recent single “Lavender”, a sweet blend of R&B, soul and reggae under the daring Montreal label MindPeaceLove and distribution by Tuff Gong International, the label of the late Bob Marley.
“Lavender” Remix ft. Jonathan Emile produced by Fabrice Jean, delves into feelings of isolation, growth and a need for connection stemming from Raven’s three-year journey over five continents. “While constantly on the move, I felt an increasing desire for a homebase with more permanent human connection. I wrote “Lavender” about the juxtaposition between a love of freedom and a longing for security”. Jonathan Emile’s bewitching verse brings a velvety reggae dimension to create a “lovers rock” atmosphere, transporting the listener into a tranquil dreamworld.
The collaboration between the two artists began in 2019, when Jonathan Emile mixed an R&B song from his unreleased album Wilderness with producer and engineer Fabrice Jean at Planet studios in Montreal. After the session, Jean showed Emile a new track he was working on with Raven, a new R&B artist. Completely blown away by the fascinating voice of the female artist and the modern-sounding, yet neo-soul-infused production, Emile immediately asked if he could participate in the remix of “Lavender” with Raven, who was elated and accepted on the spot. Emile wrote new lyrics for the remix, and the pair entered the studio with Fabrice Jean. Thus, “Lavender Remix”, a production of the MindPeaceLove label, was born. Two months later, Emile signed a distribution agreement with Tuff Gong International for his first reggae album. Raven released her first EP Some Kind of Solace this year with Jean. The three artists continue to actively collaborate on other upcoming projects.
Raven’s sound evokes the soulful essence of Norah Jones and Snoh Aalegra, while bringing out a style reminiscent of Julia Stone. “The tranquil jazzy sound and soulful delivery backed by the sweet, sweet saxophone set the stage for a lit fireplace/cold night type vibe” (blog, City Soundcheck).
