Gondwana is one of the oldest reggae bands in Latin America: When the dictator Pinochet still ruled the Republic of Chile, a group of young men led by Claudio I-Locks Labbé and his bass were beginning to find a way of expressing themselves through reggae.
Initially they were inspired by English post-punk groups that crossed the Atlantic in the early 80s, whose reggae and dub touches, particularly those first experienced when watching The Police, would be of great significance for the development of reggae in the southern hemisphere.Over the years Gondwana has produced many great songs and had many singers that have developed the band’s sound such as Quique Neira, Kingo or Maxi Vargas. Their current main singer is MC Jona.
For the first time at Rototom Sunsplash, Gondwana will have the opportunity to demonstrate the benefit of their experience gained in their 25 years as a band, from their first rehearsals in La Pincoya, their first success in their country with “Changalanga” (1997), their trip to the motherland to record “Made in Jamaica” (2002) and their adaption to new roots in “Resilient” (2006) through to their newest album “rEVOLucion” (2012).
