Wow! What a weekend this has been!
Here I was thinking that I’d just be enjoying a fantastic three days of sport – netball, basketball and football – when President Barack Obama went and turned the world upside down!
In other news, the Jamaican netball team won a test series against England, the eighth-seeded Memphis Grizzlies beat the number one seed in the NBA Western Conference, San Antonio Spurs, and Arsenal blew the English Premier League title race wide open with a victory over Manchester United. Oh, and President Obama and Seth Meyers skewered “the Donald” like that fox on his head deserves to be. That’s enough to make for an absolutely fantastic weekend. But Obama got Osama!! All of that just seems to now pale in comparison.
To make matters worse (for Donald “Chump”), breaking news reports announcing the President’s speech cut into Sunday night’s showing of Celebrity Apprentice (I don’t watch the show, but this is what I heard). I guess Donald hasn’t really enjoyed this weekend as much as I have.
Of course, with every bit of profound news the nay-sayers and know-more-than-others come crawling out from their holes, cracks and crevices. Ok, here’s another NEWS FLASH: we all know that this doesn’t mean that the “War on Terror” (stupid Bushism) is over, and that others will just rise up to take Osama’s place!! You are not smarter than the rest of the world (or a 5th-grader for that matter). But Obama got Osama!!! It’s important and many of us are happy for it.
As for the argument, “Wooooo, now the terrorists are really gonna be out to get us!” Surprise, surprise folks, the terrorists never stopped trying to get “us” (whoever us is. I personally feel like Jamaican politicians are out to get us, but Obama has refused to put them on the terror watch list. Darn!!). Terrorist factions around the world have never relented in their efforts to kill, maim, or drive fear into the hearts of us pork-eating infidels, and impose their ideologies on us. Neither will they resile from their mission now that Osama is dead. Well-thinking individuals never expected them to. But this is an important and symbolic victory for the Obama administration as well as the free world. A world that changed drastically for the worst due primarily to Bin Laden and Al Qaeda’s actions. It would, however, be difficult for terrorists to land any kind of crushing blow (nuclear or large-scale attack) as collaborative work by intelligence agencies all over the world has been very effective in thwarting their actions. The US, UK and other nations have been removing funds and resources from terrorist hands for years, and it would be a daunting task for a group or groups to come up with the required tools to pull off a devastating attack. Not impossible, but difficult.
As I write this, there are scenes on news stations of Americans celebrating in the streets; a frenzied atmosphere permeates the area on Pennsylvania Avenue in front of the White House. While their behaviour may be deemed gaudy, gratuitous and even obnoxious, quite frankly, Americans deserve this! The world deserves this! They can be given a pass for what may be a cathartic release after almost ten years of anguish, war, and more recently, economic decline initiated in large part by the events of 9/11 (and please, for those of you who opted not to attend English classes, note the term “IN LARGE PART”).
Obama got Osama!
Osama was in a massive, fortified complex – some say mansion – with “12 to 16 foot walls, walled areas, and restricted access by two security gates”. There was no telephone or internet service, in an effort to avoid being tracked – well, we know how that worked out for him (it’s a miracle the man survived so long!! So many Jamaicans can’t even go an hour without their BlackBerry). Just think, Osama, you missed out on Rebecca Black’s “Friday”, really witty twitter updates, and adding new Facebook trainees…ooops…friends, for what??? They still got ya! You even missed out on our podcasts, dammit! [http://www.yaadinfo.com]
What a weekend this has been. To see (what will be) historical events unfold before your eyes is amazing and surreal. Nine and a half years ago, at approximately 9 AM on a Tuesday morning I got a call from my dad. “What’s going on in America?”, he asked, then said, “turn the TV to CNN.” We all know what came next. At that time I could never have imagined how things would have unfolded, that America would become mired in two wars and an abominable mountain of debt, that the Arab/Muslim world would rise up to fight for democracy without (for the most part) the intervention of the US, that on the 1st of May 2011 a black President would be announcing Osama bin Laden’s death.
I wonder how the elections of 2012 are looking for the President now…
