Victoria Mutual Building Society, along with several other sponsors, namely, Caribbean Frozen Foods, Jamaica Bedding Company Ltd, Davidi Photo, Soul Rebel Productions. OJay Koolers, Watson &Associates, PA, Dr Sue and You, Ken Damally- have generously donated copies of the book “Ode to Miss Lou, From the Soul of Dr Sue” to the Jamaica Library service.
Over 120 books have been sponsored and will be distributed across the island to the Parish libraries. The author will also be donating copies of the book to the school libraries of her almamaters – Knox College in Spalding Clarendon, and Mortant Bay High School in St. Thomas.
Additionally, the funds from the purchase of these books will be donated to the Diaspora Advancement in Education Task Force to assist with the building of schools and teacher development in Jamaica.
The book is a tribute to the late Hon. Louise Bennett Coverley, Dr. Sue’s mentor and muse, and a celebration of Jamaican culture and heritage lovingly infused in a collection of 50 performance style pieces with foreword from actor/comedian, Oliver Samuels and high praise from the Louise Bennett Coverley Estate.
As was noted in Dr Sue’s recent TVJ interview with Neville, the book is written in three sections, “Ode to Miss Lou” – which are performance style pieces written in the vernacular; “My Soul” are introspective, motivational and inspiring pieces; while “Let’s Talk” explores more provocative, informational and discussion topics. Overall the book is on which will entertain, educate and empower its readers. One educator puts it this way, “…. the book is engaging! For those who struggle with reading, writing, and vocabulary development, your book integrates so many core ideas that educators today must understand are important: culture, language, and cognition. When you read the poetry, it has a rhythmic notion that makes the words fly off the page.”
The book is available locally at: Sangsters Book Store, Bookaphelia, Kingston Book Shops, Fontana and through LMH Publishers at the airport book stores.
