On this day in Jamaican history: On July 26th 2006, Jamaican icon,, died in Ontario, Canada. Miss Lou was a Jamaican folklorist, artiste and writer. Writing and performing her poems in what was known as Jamaican Patois, she was instrumental in having this “dialect” of the people given literary recognition in its own right , located at the heart of the Jamaican poetic tradition, and influencing many other poets, including Mutabaruka and Linton Kwesi Johnson and also Trinidad’s Paul Keens-Douglas.
