On this day in Jamaican history: Sarah Newland-Martin was born on August 5th 1946 with deformed legs. To deal with her situation she was sent to Mona Rehabilitation Centre (now the Sir John Golden Rehabilitation). In 1965 she received the Jamaican Sportswoman of the Year Award for being the only woman with a disability to complete the ‘Across The Harbour’, a 2 1/2 mile swim in Kingston Harbour.
