One Thousand New IT Jobs Coming To Jamaica

Jamaica is to add another 1000 microwork-based jobs within the next six months as part of a deal being brokered between the California based group MobileWorks and the Government.   Representatives from Mobile Works met with Industry, Investment and Commerce Minister, Anthony Hylton at his offices in Kingston on Monday.

As part of the proposed relationship, MobileWorks will make available its microwork  technology platform as a medium for managing disaggregated work activities, which will in turn provide part time and full time jobs in Jamaica through local training facilities,  entrepreneurs and Government.

Where mega projects exist, MobileWorks will disaggregate these projects into smaller more manageable elements of the job, which can be undertaken by IT savvy individuals working   in remote locations. This will mean that a company in New York, which wants to do business in Jamaica can create the necessary application for the research to be carried out by teamsl in  remote locations.

CEO of Mobile Works Anand Kularni described the process as a matching service. “We do the research on both sides to ensure that the company offering the jobs is matched perfectly with the individual with the appropriate skill set, who needs the job.”  He said his team was impressed by the creativity and entrepreneurial spirit of the Jamaican teams in the recently concluded Digital Jam 2.0 conference.  Jamaica he noted, is now ready to begin creating applications and services which can be sold globally and pledged his company’s support in the creation of microworks producing enterprises.

In welcoming the Mobile Works team, Minister Hylton said this initiative will stimulate growth in the economy and provide opportunities for untapped talent. In his contribution to the 2012 sectoral debate, the Industry and Commerce Minister underscored that the thrust of his Ministry would be to grow the economy with jobs through the digital economy. This effort is consistent with the fundamental principle of shoring up Jamaica’s position on the  global value chain as the basis for a viable growth strategy.
