Petrojam’s Graduate Internship Programme will be officially launched on February 5 by Minister of Science, Technology, Energy and Mining (STEM), Hon.  Phillip Paulwell.

The programme, to be launched at the Pegasus Hotel in New Kingston, will give Jamaica’s brightest young scientists and those interested in the field, an opportunity to gain valuable hands on experience in the field.

According to the Minister, the project provides an excellent platform to bolster the long-term goals of Petrojam, by expanding and upgrading its operations and having a cadre of competent scientists with the requisite skill set to choose from.

“As a Ministry, we are focusing on Science and Technology and innovation, and we have to continue to play a leading role in the training component of our people. This [programme] is a part of the training that we’re putting in place, which will enable us to have our people properly trained. It will also enable us, in our other objectives, of finding oil and gas in and around Jamaica, because they will have the competence,” he told JIS News.

He explained that persons to be chosen for the programme come from all across Jamaica, and have demonstrated certain levels of aptitude and possess the requisite attitude, adding that the Ministry wants to encourage them to remain in Jamaica to enhance their skills and deploy those skills within the employ of the Government and in particular, Petrojam.

Mr. Paulwell noted that one key component that should ensure the success of the programme is the collaboration with the Ministry of Education, while adding that the Minister has been very encouraging.

“The Ministry of Education started with us at the first step.  We were able to provide the resources and with their support, we are now at this point where we can launch this graduation project,” he said.
