Food For The Poor Is Number One!

The Chronicle of Philanthropy, one of the foremost newspapers of the nonprofit world, has awarded Food For The Poor two excellent spots in its annual rankings of the 400 largest charities in the United States.

After reviewing hundreds of charities, The Chronicle of Philanthropy rated Florida-based Food For The Poor as the number 1 international aid agency in the U.S. The newspaper also ranked Food For The Poor as the 5th largest overall charity out of 400 nonprofits nationwide. On the state level, Food For The Poor retained the number 1 slot. The rankings appear in the 18th edition of The Chronicle of Philanthropy’s annual “The Philanthropy 400” report.

“Because of the kindness and generosity of our supporters everywhere, we are able to continue helping the poorest of the poor in a large way,” said Food For The Poor’s President and Chief Executive Officer, Robin Mahfood, “so this recognition by The Chronicle of Philanthropy honors our donors also.”

One reason that Food For The Poor receives such high praise from donors and industry experts is that it consistently maintains an impressive efficiency ratio. In 2007, Food For The Poor’s efficiency ratio was 3.22%. That means that more than 96% of all donations to the charity go to programs that directly benefit those most in need.

Food For The Poor has consistently earned an “Exceptional”, four out of four stars rating from Charity Navigator, the nation’s foremost independent charity evaluator – a rating that means that Food For The Poor exceeds industry standards and performs with exceptional efficiency. In fact, Charity Navigator, which reviews and rates more than 5,300 charities, says Food For The Poor is one of only 45 nonprofits that has earned a 4-star rating seven years in a row. Ministry Watch gives Food For The Poor a 5 Star Financial Efficiency rating – the highest possible score. Forbes Magazine, which puts out an annual list of America’s biggest charities, says the industry average efficiency rating in 2007 was 90%, compared to Food For The Poor’s fundraising efficiency ratio of 97%. And the Better Business Bureau reports that Food For The Poor meets the “extensive standards of America’s most experienced charity evaluator.”

Established in 1982, Food For The Poor provides nourishing food, safe shelter, necessary medical care, educational materials, support for orphans and the aged, development projects and much more to the poorest of the poor in 16 countries in the Caribbean and Latin America.
