The national campaign, aimed at encouraging the display of national pride through the wearing of official Jamaica 50 pins, has been taken to the nation’s schools.
Minister of Youth and Culture, Hon. Lisa Hanna and Minister of Education, Rev. the Hon. Ronald Thwaites on November 28, launched the ‘Pin of Pride’ campaign for schools on the grounds of the St. Andrew High School for Girls.
As part of the initiative, the pins will be available to students at a discounted rate, which they can wear with their uniforms. Schools, alumni and parent teachers associations (PTA) will be able to retail the pins and use the profits for fundraising efforts.
Speaking at the ceremony, Minister Hanna said Jamaica is the “coolest country on the planet,” pointing to the worldwide recognition and celebration of Jamaica’s culture, particularly music, as well as its major achievements in sports.
“There is a lot to take pride in…this Pin of Pride is not about an ornament. It’s a symbol of your mission, your pride, your destiny, and what you believe,” she stated.
She urged the students to wear the pins with “that resilience, that fire in your belly, that passion that Bob Marley speaks about.”
Describing the commemorative pins as a kind of “wedding ring”, Rev. Thwaites said: “things have changed because the people of this country have invested in education, and especially in secondary education, so that now every Jamaican can be placed in a high school…we must be proud of who we are as Jamaican young people and we need symbols to do this…I believe the pins which are being launched and promoted in schools today will do just that”.
Students from several high schools across the Corporate Area attended the ceremony, which was marked by entertainment showcasing national folk forms.
The ‘Pin of Pride’ is the main feature of the One Million Pins initiative, which seeks to motivate Jamaicans at home and overseas, and friends of Jamaica, to display nationalism, love and support for the island, by wearing the official Jamaica 50 commemorative pin.
It falls under the licencing and merchandising component of the commercial and brand development initiatives of the Jamaica 50 celebrations.
