On the weekend my wife and I were in a deep conversation while watching TV when suddenly we both went silent. Out mouths were wide open. It was an interracial(IR) commercial featuring a black and white couple. We looked at each other with surprise. I did not know she was going to have the same reaction I did. I traveled to places in Europe where IR commercials, with black and white, are nothing new. Has the US finally made the turn. Are there more IR commercials out there? I know we see black and white relationships on TV but it is rare in commercial. American Express had the IR commercial with White and Chinese couple. There is also the White and Hispanic commercials. These other couples probably draw no attention because of the closeness in hue. Some don’t even consider it IR. However Black and White couples in commercials are still taboo. No advertisers wants to say it but this type of IR pairing is really “risky” in a country that is suppose to be “tolerant”. Do they they fear offending the majority? The commercial seemed to be a local South Florida company so it was probably not shown nationwide. The couple was a Black male and a white female. I know many have issues with that but just seeing this type of commercial to me is progress…
