I am extremely proud to learn of the outstanding performance of our athletes at the 18th Commonwealth Games in Melbourne, Australia. The coveted 100 metre double victory of World 100m record holder Asafa Powell and SheriAnn Brooks in the men’s and women’s categories respectively, serves as a strong reminder that Jamaica is a leader in the field of athletics.
Asafa assured the nation that he would retain his world title and his victory is not only a personal success but one of which all Jamaicans can be proud.
Congratulations also to our Javelin Thrower Olivia McKoy who distinguished herself by taking the bronze medal in this field event and securing Jamaica’s first medal at the games.
The strength and courage of other Jamaican athletes who participated in their individual events has also brought pride and joy to Jamaica and the experience gained will no doubt improve their performances at other international meets.
On behalf of all Jamaicans, I extend my sincere congratulations to our athletes who continue to maintain the country’s dominance in athletics.
