Prime Minister, the Most Hon. Portia Simpson Miller, has established an Inter-Ministerial Committee to develop a comprehensive approach and implementation plan to spearhead clean-up activities across the island.

The Committee, chaired by Minister with responsibility for Information, Senator the Hon. Sandrea Falconer, represents a joined up government approach and will include an islandwide public education campaign, emphasising the importance of proper solid waste management in communities and homes.

According to Director of Disaster, Emergency Management and Special Services at the Ministry of Health, and Chair of the sub-committee on public education, Dr. Marion Bullock Ducasse, “the public education campaign is going to ensure that persons understand how to clean-up the environment safely; how to dispose of their garbage properly; how to containerise it and ensure storage until it is collected, to reduce the presence of breeding sites for our many vectors that carry diseases.”

The Inter-Ministerial Committee includes representatives from the Office of the Prime Minister (OPM), the Ministries of Local Government, Education and Agriculture, as well as the National Solid Waste Management Authority (NSWMA), Jamaica Information Service (JIS), the Food Storage Division, and the Kingston & St. Andrew Corporation.
