Atlanta , Georgia , September 20, 2007. The Queen’s Alumnae Atlanta Chapter (QAAC) hosts its triennial All Class Reunion October 5 – 7 with an extensive schedule of activities for the weekend. The group is trying to get as many past students and teachers from Queen’s High School in Jamaica together in Atlanta to reminisce, rekindle old friendships and make plans for the continued support of their alma mater in Kingston Jamaica .
The weekend activities begin with a “meet and greet session” on Friday, October 5, from 7 p.m. – 11 p.m. at the Holiday Inn Select on Chamblee-Dunwoody Road , Atlanta . “We know that quite a few people will be traveling with their families – driving up from Florida or flying in from New York and Toronto , so this is an informal gathering for alumnae and their families,” said Heather Potter, QAAC President. The luncheon on the following day, Saturday, October 6th is the highlight of the weekend when the current principal of the school, Mrs. Yvonne Keane- Dawes, addresses the gathering.
“It is so important that we all get a hands-on perspective on what is happening at the school so that we can plan to assist the students and the school more effectively,” Ms. Potter noted. “Having Mrs. Keane-Dawes here allows all past students, new and old, to get first hand information, and ask those questions that are near and dear to our hearts. It also allows Mrs. Keane-Dawes to get a personal connection to the great resource that is to be found in the alumnae. We are very grateful to Air Jamaica for sponsoring her travel and for providing two round trip tickets to Jamaica for which raffle tickets are available,” Ms. Potter said.
As hosts the Atlanta Chapter will assist with transportation to a family-friendly party planned for Saturday night in Decatur . The group will worship together at St. Andrews Presbyterian Church in Tucker on Sunday morning. The Queen’s Alumnae Atlanta Chapter focuses raises funds to offer scholarships to current students competing in an essay competition sponsored by the chapter. The group also provides support to the school’s Welfare Program for needy students and to students needing assistance to pay for their CXC exams. The Florida Chapter of the alumnae is heavily involved in local charity efforts including feeding the hungry and homeless, particularly in the Fort Lauderdale and Pembroke Pines areas.
The Queen’s School in Kingston Jamaica is a high school for girls only. Founded in 1956 with 54 students it is now home to more than 1500 girls from first through 5th form (7th – 12th grade) and additional classes for 6th formers – advanced studies in selected topics.
