New Jersey’s signature Caribbean entertainment outlets, G City Enterprise and Icon World Entertainment, have added Reggae’s ‘Queen’ Marcia Griffiths to the Mother’s Day StarTime  concert, also featuring legendary Reggae crooner Sanchez  and Terry Linen, on Sunday, May 9th at the Robert Treat Hotel in Newark, NJ.

Marcia Griffiths, who was awarded the Order of Distinction from the government of her native Jamaica in 1994, is perhaps best known the hit single “Electric Boogie” originally recorded in 1982.  Re-released in 1989, “Electric Boogie” peaked at #78 on the Billboard Top Hip Hop and R&B charts, touching off an international dance craze – the Electric Slide. “Electric Boogie” and the accompanying Electric Slide dance have been featured on The Oprah Winfrey Show, and The Phil Donahue Show, and the video was a regular on BET, MTV, VH1 and other international music channels. Marcia Griffiths was also an original member of the I-Threes, the iconic trio that provided background vocals for Bob Marley and the Wailers in the mid 1970s.

She began her professional singing career in 1964 as a vocalist for the legendary Byron Lee & the Dragonaires. Coxsone Dodd, Bob Andy, Sonia Pottinger, Bob Marley, Peter Tosh, Beres Hammond, and Bunny Livingston are among the legendary Reggae musicians that Marcia Griffiths has recorded with. “Feel Like Jumping,” “Really Together” with Bob Andy, “Young Gifted and Black,” “Stepping Out of Babylon,” and “Live On” featuring Beres Hammond are among her most popular Reggae hit singles.

“Marcia Griffiths is truly the Queen of Reggae, it is fitting that she be part of our inaugural Mother’s Day StarTime event,” states Kacey ‘G City’ Rankine. “With a 40+ year career of making Reggae hits, she always has, and continues to raise the bar for artists, particularly female artists in a male-dominated industry. She is an inspiration, and the perfect choice to join Sanchez and Terry Linen on stage to celebrate Mother’s Day.”

Mother’s Day StarTime is a brand new edition to the series of Caribbean events offered annually by G City Enterprise and Icon World Entertainment. In addition to the popular New Jersey Reggae Fest,–now in its 10th year– Reggae at the Ritz, and Karib Fever, Mother’s Day StarTime will be one of the key events that New Jersey’s Caribbean community can look forward to.

“Our events celebrate the rich history of Caribbean music and culture,” states Frank Cunningham of Icon World Entertainment. “The tri-state area has approximately 2.5 million Caribbean and Caribbean-American residents that have made an indelible mark on the social and cultural fabric of the area. Mother’s Day StarTime is great way to honor Caribbean women, particularly Caribbean mothers. We are excited that we have legends like Marcia Griffiths and Sanchez, and a remarkable talent like Terry Linen – this is something mothers of all generations can appreciate.”

G City Enterprise and Icon World Entertainment present Mother’s Day StarTime on Sunday, May 9th at the Robert Treat Hotel in Newark, NJ. Featured acts include Sanchez, Marcia Griffiths, and Terry Linen; more acts to be added.
