Review: MAC Ruby Woo Lipstick

Hello loves!

Today I’m going to review one of THE most hyped red lipsticks on the planet. I was never a fan of red lipstick, mainly because finding the right shade for my skin tone is a little tricky, & I especially never had the courage to wear them either. I have however purchased quite a few, but so far, MAC’s Ruby Woo ($16) outshines them all. Believe me when I say this one is a classic!

Firstly, Ruby Woo is a very matte, matte, matte red (yes, I said matte three times) with blue undertones. Because it is blue-based, it allows your teeth to appear a lot brighter and whiter. It also compliments my skin tone very well, & I honestly think it has the ability to look great on anyone, no matter their skin or hair colour. Without a doubt, it’s the red for everyone.

It is highly pigmented, as with most MAC lipsticks. However, I have also found Ruby Woo to be a bit dry, and so it can be a little difficult to apply (a little rhyming right there). The solution to this problem is to just swipe a little lip balm underneath before using the lipstick, and with a maximum of two strokes applied with moderate pressure, I achieved a rich colour with ease. Though Ruby Woo does not bleed much, I still use a lip liner (MAC Lip Pencil in Cherry) to reduce the risk of this occurring. This step is not a must though! Ruby Woo is a part of MAC’s permanent line, and so it comes in their standard lipstick casing, so nothing special there.

Thanks to its matte finish, this lipstick has a wonderful staying power. You can eat, drink, and go up to an average of 5-6 hours without reapplying. This doesn’t necessarily mean it will look super fresh as when you first applied, but it really does last. Even after it begins to fade, it leaves behind a stain, but during this time, it may unfortunately highlight any imperfections on your lips. Therefore, you may want to walk with the lipstick and a tiny mirror so you can do any necessary touch-ups.

Overall, Ruby Woo is one of the best lipsticks I have ever used. The only problem I have with this, which is very minor, is that your lips have to be in perfect condition in order for it to look its best (check below for some tips on how to prep your lips). The rich pigmentation and longevity of this lipstick gives it an edge over many lipsticks on the market, and I can see why it is a cult favourite among many women. I would definitely recommend this to someone looking for that perfect red lipstick!

Here are a few tips for prepping your lips before applying Ruby Woo & any other matte lipstick:
  • Exfoliate your lips using a lip scrub. You can also make your own scrub with a few basic ingredients from your kitchen. (Find out how to here!)
  • Prime your lips with a lip balm to avoid chapped lips and to prevent your lipstick from appearing dried out.
  • Most importantly, stay hydrated! This is a simple and easy way to help your chapped lips.
