Singer Cherine Announces The 2014 R.O.C. Scholarship Program – Deadline to Apply is June 30th

Prominent Jamaican singer/actress Cherine and The R.O.C. Foundation have announced that they are now accepting applications for their 2014 R.O.C. Scholarship program. The foundation, established in 2004 by Cherine Anderson and Patrick Lindsay, is dedicated to providing need-based scholarships, motivational and mentorship programs for youths across Jamaica.

The R.O.C. Scholarship program was established to recognize and support 6th grade students from primary and all-age schools who demonstrate their commitment to excellence in academics, service and the arts but who also have a financial need.

The R.O.C. Scholarship program provides both renewable as well as one-year grants for their high school years. Scholarships are meant to be supplementary and generally cover full tuition, text-books, uniform and supplies for those who qualify.

In 2013, twenty-one (21) students were awarded scholarships from across the island. Among the group of scholars were members of the national championship teams for their respective school’s Junior School Challenge Quiz, National Reading Competition, National Spelling Bee Competition, JCDC Festival Competition-Dance, Music and Drama, Rabbit Care Management Competition, as well as a University of the West Indies Junior Math Olympiad. Among the group of scholars were perfect scores in GSAT Communication Task, with grades as high as 99% in GSAT Social Studies and Mathematics and 97% in Science.

Current R.O.C. Scholars attend some of the nations top ranked high schools. These include The Wolmer’s Girls Trust, Kingston College, Westwood High, St. Hildas High, Campion College, Manchester High, Oberlin High, Ardenne High, Convent of Mercy-Alpha Academy, Excelsior High, Glenmuir High, Merl Grove High, Camperdown High, Morant Bay High, Seafort High and York Castle High.

R.O.C, an acronym for Reach One Child, operates under the mantra “Each One, Teach One to Reach One”. As a result all R.O.C. Scholars are required to ‘give back’ through service to their schools and/or communities. Most scholars serve as student mentors during the Foundation’s annual school tour initiative. With a village of support that includes R.O.C’s directors, parents and volunteers, R.O.C. scholars also help to organize book drives that help to support their scholastic ambitions.
