Another entertaining and quality piece of theater comes to town on Saturday, November 3rd at North Miami Beach Performing Arts Center and Sunday, November 11th at Coral Springs Center for the Arts when Andrew Roach’s Strength of a Woman makes its South Florida debut. Presented by Riddims Marketing and Jamaica Awareness, Inc, the play is a hot new comedy, unfolding a powerful plot and features an all-star cast of Deon Silvera, Audrey Reid, Volier Johnson, Chris Daley and Sheldon Shepherd
Having spent the better part of his life in theatre as a set designer and builder, traveling the globe for over 22 years with Oliver Samuels and the top team of Jambiz International, Andrew Roach’s first attempt at playwriting has produced a riveting true-to-life story.
Strength of a Woman boasts a versatile ensemble cast, headed by Audrey Reid in the role of Rose, a no-nonsense Christian woman and housekeeper who works for an uptown family. Her young son, Johnny (Chris Daley) becomes an object of lust for her boss’ manipulative wife, Sharon (an engaging Deon Silvera).
Rose strongly disapproves of Sharon’s intentions and things take a turn for the worse.
The action is explosive from the get-go, particularly in scenes where the husband, Lloyd (played with vigour by Volier Johnson) clashes with his wife and her young lover. But when the situation really gets out of control,
there are unexpected and life-altering consequences.
Reid leads the cast well, capturing the emotions, body language and perseverance of a woman who is torn between her allegiance to the church and the crisis she faces as a mother trying to save her son. Her talent is
evident in Strength of a Woman; the tight mother-son relationship she shares onstage with Daley is one of the highlights of the play. But as is the case with many ghetto families in Jamaica, the mother is forced to wonder if her child is really as innocent as he appears to be.
Strength of a Woman is worth seeing, as the play is brilliantly executed by the earnest and believable performances of the all-star cast under the direction of Winston “Bello” Bell, who is making his directorial debut.
Tickets are available at selected Caribbean outlets and patrons are urged to purchase early as good seats are going fast and there has been an unusually high inquiry by the public regarding ticket availability.
