A Message from Dr. Karren Dunkley, Global Jamaica Diaspora Council, NE Representative
Thank you for the tremendous collaboration during this unprecedented COVID-19 pandemic. This crisis is global, and we have learned of several deaths related to the coronavirus among our Jamaican community.
The Northeast Diaspora Region continues to take a pro-active and positive approach to this pandemic. We have partnered with numerous individuals and several organizations, to disseminate a targeted message that emphasizes precautionary measures to mitigate the spread of the virus.
We have provided strategic supports such as food/care packages to students and families in need, temporary housing for displaced international students, and counseling services to address people’s emotional health.
We convened a Northeast Health Sector team comprised of individuals in the medical profession to organize for effort around resources and strategy to address the COVID-19 pandemic stateside and in Jamaica. Regarding the Ministry of Health’s procurement list, we have partnered with a medical logistics and supply expert to source some of the requested items.
We understand that COVID-19 will severely impact the socio-economic status of our community, most visibly in the collapse of our ability to send remittances and lead/support social impact programs back home.
We remain hopeful that with the collective wisdom, passion, and contribution of the Diaspora, notably our faith-based partners- we will get our response right. We ask each of you to continue to take care of each other, form support groups via different technology media, and check-in on each other, especially our most vulnerable citizens, i.e., our elderly, families in need, etc.
Importantly, we stand firm in our faith in God to preserve us during these critical times.
Dr. Karren Dunkley
