According to Rayon McLean, Creative Writing Development Specialist at the JCDC: “The annual Creative Writing competition is one of the JCDC’s more popular competitions and receives hundreds of entries each year.  We have therefore extended the deadline at the request of the public to better facilitate some of their last minute entries.”

“Over the years the Jamaica Creative Writing Competition has been one of the best channels of providing Jamaican writers with the opportunity of recognizing and validating their talent, while showcasing and promoting writers and their original work.” he further stated.

McLean also noted that though persons may write on any topic of their choosing, they may also enter under the National Water Commission’s sponsored theme “Water is Life, do the right thing: Conserve Water and Save” for a chance to win special prizes.

“In addition to the invaluable experience and talent development offered by this competition, writers have the chance to win attractive prizes including cash incentives, trophies and gift packages courtesy of the CHASE Fund and other sponsors.” McLean said.

The Jamaica Creative Writing Competition and Exhibition is divided into three levels: Junior, Intermediate and Adult and awards are given to the top writers in each level of the five areas. Entrants are encouraged to write about the Jamaican experience.

Persons can access entry forms, rules and competition guidelines from the JCDC website, www.jcdc.gov.jm, its Head Office at 3-5 Phoenix Avenue in Kingston or Parish Offices across the island.

The 2019 Jamaica Creative Writing Competition is sponsored by the CHASE Fund, the Kingston and St. Andrew Municipal Corporation, National Water Commission, Excelsior, Happy Ice and Popeyes.
