The Altamont Court Hotel is tucked away in the heart of New Kingston. Locally owned and operated by the Jarrett family, the 58 room hotel has been in operation for over twenty years. I arrived at 9pm and breezed through the checking process. The bell boy assisted me with my luggage to the top floor. The spacious room had a king size bed and certain worn out old charm. 1950’s movie charm where James Bond would escape. I couldn’t help but think that with a few modern fixtures would significantly up the chic factor.
The garden had a ‘welcome home’ feel and I read in my favorite nook under the tree daily. I enjoyed reading and watching the bees buzz in and around the flowers.

Serving a spectacular array of Jamaican breakfast like ackee and saltfish, brown stewed fish, steamed cabbage, saltfish run dung (in coconut sauce) and steamed calalloo, a plant similar to collard greens. There are also American breakfast offerings like eggs, bacon and toast. I stayed for six days and had six delicious breakfasts. Every morning I looked forward to being surprised by the menu. I relished my daily cup of Jablum coffee with condensed milk that had me buzzing all day. By the second day the wait staff and I were in a first name basis and the front deck knew what time I wanted my evening chocolate treats.
My room featured flat screen TVs, cable tv air conditioning, free wifi, a safety deposit box. The bed was a little too firm for my liking (you know I’m delicate), but the room was spacious with plenty of closet space, a chest of drawers and a dining table with two chairs.
There are almost daily events like Jerk Thursdays, International cuisine nights like Authentic Italian, Classic French, Taste of India and TropicalCaribbean. Live entertainment and cultural performances. Although the business traveller is the hotel’s target, families and tourists alike will feel like they are part of the Altamont family with the many activities and the personalized service.
