The Heavyweights Brass Band Gives Back: Contest to Benefit Schools

With the intention of giving back to their community and staying involved with young, emerging musicians, The Heavyweights Brass Band is reaching out to schools both private and public with a contest for a prize package worth approximately $3400. The prize will be awarded to the school that rallies the most students to attend their upcoming CD release concert for Brasstronomical, at Lula Lounge on March 6. Sponsors to this initiative include Yamaha Canada, St. John’s Music and Long & McQuade Musical Instruments. In addition to the Heavyweights Brass Band, students will have the opportunity to hear award-winning artists Jane Bunnett on saxophone, Jay Douglas on vocals and Luis Orbegoso on percussion. Street Brass, a community-based brass band playing the Music of The Americas, will be opening the evening. This is a group that welcomes high school musicians, amateurs and professionals alike.

This country’s greatest purveryors of feel-good horn music, Toronto-based collective THE HEAVYWEIGHTS BRASS BAND now packs a one-two punch of crossover appeal and respect from music’s elite with the release of their sophomore album BRASSTRONOMICAL. This concert is presented with the generous support of the TDJ Special Projects initiative created by Toronto Downtown Jazz (TDJ), producers of the annual TD Toronto Jazz Festival. The initiative encourages the creation, development and presentation of special projects by jazz musicians in the City of Toronto.
