Fresh off a brilliant Christmas concert to a capacity audience at the Plantation United Methodist Church, The South Florida Caribbean Chorale heads to the Parker Playhouse on Tuesday December 18, 2018 to open in concert for the internationally acclaimed Soweto Gospel Choir.
The Soweto Gospel choir has included Fort Lauderdale as part of their world tour, offering performances at 11:00am and then again at 7:30pm on December 18, 2018.
“The South Florida Caribbean Chorale(SFCC) is pleased to be part of this presentation, which has been arranged by the Broward Center for the Performing Arts”, said Steve Higgins, Founder and Director of the 15-year-old SFCC. Continuing, he states “This group is comprised of 35 members from churches and organizations from all over the South Florida Tri-County area”.
Higgins founded the SFCC with the blessing of the Jamaican Consulate, to be the leading choir for the annual official church service celebrating Jamaica’s independence. The group is stamped with his signature for all their shows. Every genre is included in their repertoire, from classical music to authentic Jamaican folk songs. The passing on, and presentation, of Jamaica’s folk music and folk culture, is a very serious mission, and is taken seriously by this group. “Our Jamaican Folk music is beautiful, world-class and appreciated by other peoples the world over”, says Higgins. Tuesday’s performance will see spiritual Jamaican folk songs as well as music written by one of Jamaica’s most prolific and celebrated composers and musicians, Noel Dexter.

Steve Higgins sang with the Jamaica Folk Singers under the direction of noted ethnomusicologist, The Honorable Dr. Olive Lewin, for over 20 years, touring widely overseas with group she founded, the internationally acclaimed Jamaica Folk singers. Some of the most memorable tours included performances at Westminster Abbey in London, the Drummondville Music festival in Quebec, the Cultural show held in Jamaica for Archbishop Desmond Tutu just before the release of Nelson Mandela, and singing at the BBC for one of Queen Elizabeth’s celebrations.
Higgins, renowned for his ‘Steve Higgins & Friends’ concerts, recently presented his annual concert at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts, and will stage his signature Valentine’s Concert “Falling For You” at the David Posnack Jewish Community Center on February 16, 2019.
