May 10th is “Indian Heritage Day” in Jamaica. It is celebrated in recognition of the Indians who first arrived in Jamaica on May 10, 1845 as indentured workers. They were brought to Jamaica to work on  sugarcane plantations, banana estates, and livestock holdings following the abolition of slavery. A plaque in commemoration of the first landing was mounted in Old Harbour in 1983.
