jamarchGuyana and Antigua/Barbuda, so far unbeaten in the Tower Isle/Caribbean Cup Soccer Championship, will meet in this Sunday’s feature presentation at the Jefferson High School Field, in Canarsie Brooklyn, Game time is 5:30 pm.
The Guyana vs Antigua/Barbuda meeting will be preceded by Trinidad/Tobago v Dominica and Haiti playing Barbados. A win for Guyana (2-0) will put them at the top of the Western Conference, the same scenario that awaits Antigua/Barbuda (2-0).
With just one quarter of the season gone, both teams know that it is still early as are yet to face the 2011 co-champions Jamaica, which made a joke out of the competition in their opening match last week, dismantling a short-handed Dominica by 9-0 in front of a disappointing crowd.
In one other match on Sunday, new-comers Panama remained unbeaten as they squeezed out a narrow 2-1 win over many time champions St. Vincent & The Grenadines (SVG). 2011 co-champions Grenada share top honors in the Eastern Conference with Panama.
Many times champion Jamaica and former champions Grenada started the season as co-champions, following disruptions in the scheduling which left no room for the 2011 championship match.
Co-champions Grenada will lead the challenge in the East Zone alongside, Haiti, St. Vincent & Grenadines, St. Lucia, Barbados and Panama. Jamaica is drawn in the West Zone that includes; Trinidad & Tobago, Antigua/Barbuda, St. Kitts/Nevis, Guyana and Dominica.
A feature of the 21st season which kicked off on May 13, will be an all-star classic between selections from the East and West zones on Sunday, July 29 at 5:30 pm. The following week – August 4 –the competition takes a break to recognize Jamaica’s 50 Anniversary of Independence.
Fred Ballantyne, CC President said that some emphasis will be placed on the youth this year with selections of boys and girls teams parading their skills during the all-stars weekend. And with Digicel opting out of its sponsorship agreement, the committee has found a new partner in Tower Isle Frozen Foods, makers of Tower Isle Patties, Brooklyn.
