In an effort to promote youth activism, the NCB Foundation last year teamed up with Digicel to donate over three million dollars to the favourite charities of the top five 2008 Digicel Rising Stars. The N.C.B. Foundation saw the opportunity to work with the Digicel Rising Star contestants as a chance to show young people how they can be agents of change within their schools and communities.
Concerned about her community, 2008 Digicel Rising Star, Cameal Davis, appropriately chose the Denham Town Park as her charity. For years, the children of Denham Town were forced to play in the undeveloped dusty field known to many as ‘The Dust Bowl’. The restoration project, spearheaded by the Denham Town Princess, will now provide a recreational area with the proper facilities to accommodate a range of sporting activities.
On Sunday May 10, the N.C.B. Foundation in association with the Digicel Rising Stars Community Development Programme will unveil the newly restored Denham Town Community Park.
Cameal Davis expressed her delight in the completed project: “This project is a major accomplishment for me and my community. It feels great to give back to the community in a way that everyone can benefit. It is multi-purpose: It’s for recreational and educational use as well as the beautification of Denham Town.
“I would gladly implore any and everyone to get involved in a community project or help in any way they can.”
Digicel’s Sponsorship and Events Manager, Tahnida Nunes, believes that it is initiatives like this that really make a real difference in inner-city communities: “Digicel Rising Stars is proud to be a part of such a project where we can see the tangible impact on members of the community. We expect that Denham Town will claim this park as their own and preserve it for generations to come.”
The unveiling event will take place at the Denham Town Community Park commencing at 10:00 a.m. with a community sport competition featuring Netball, Basketball and Football games. The official ceremony will begin at 2:00 p.m. with special guest speaker Prime Minister, The Honourable Bruce Golding.
