The visiting West Portland Little League Baseball team from Jamaica wrapped up their inaugural tour of the Northeast USA on a very positive note on Sunday, August 26, 2007 with a remarkable 6-3 win over their host, Bayside Little League (BLL) team at the Crocheron Park Diamond, Bayside (Queens), NY.
Excellent starting pitching from Jason White, who pitched a complete game, giving up 3 runs and striking out seven batters, combined with strong hitting and aggressive base running by his Jamaican teammates, sealed the win, their second on the tour, following a 10-2 tour-opening triumph against an 11-12 age group team from the BLL division earlier in the week.
Bob Reid, Commissioner of Baseball for the BLL commended the Jamaicans for being good students of the game before presenting each player with a trophy for their competitive approach.
He noted that it was the first international exposure for the Bayside players and he said that the players from both sides will be better off from the exposure and the experiences gained.
The team of 10 players and three coaches who were guests of the Northshore Baptist Church and BLL, return to Jamaica on Wednesday, August 29.
