What Happened to Officials’ Vow to Protect us?

I’m sure you will recognize this:

We the People of the United States, in Order to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defense, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America.

Of course you remember the preamble to the United States Constitution. So why don’t those who’re supposed to be runnning the country remember it?

What happened to justice? Where is our domestic tranquility? And shouldn’t the “common defense”  include protecting Americans from each other? And by the way, when you hear crazies talk about “liberty,” you should remind them that it’s the blessings  of liberty we’re supposed to be enjoying, not the hazards.

With the current Supreme Court, any thought of a just society is laughable. All you have to do is take a look at the prisons and figure out why  so many of the 2.3 million people behind bars belong to ethnic minorities. You think racial profiling might have something to do with it?

And how can those mean-spirited members of Congress contemplate shredding the social safety net when they solemnly raised their right hands and swore they would “promote the general welfare”?

Most outrageous of all is the government’s failure to provide “domestic tranquility.”

All over the country, we’re at one another’s throats. In politics, on the streets, in our homes. Not just metaphorically, in brutal reality as well. And there’s no lack of deadly weapons to abet and encourage our violence.

The massacre of those 20 children in Connecticut glaringly spotlights the lack of protection that ordinary American citizens must endure day after day. It is the most horrific of a spate of violent crimes resulting from failed gun laws, inadequate mental health programs and a society so frustrating, unfair and unfulfilling that it drives people crazy.

From mass shootings to domestic batterings, Americans are killing each other and themselves at a rate that would surely amaze and sadden the Founding Fathers. More than 100,000 of us are killed and wounded just by firearms each year. The knifings and the batterings and the axe murders – and the prevailing general mayhem – are not included in that statistic.

Little childen cross the streets in parts of Chicago at their peril as rival gangs fill the air with bullets. And the horror is repated in city after city across America.

It’s not just the cities that have become war zones.

In Paragould, Arkansas, a town with only 25,000 people, the mayor has just (unconstitutionally) declared martial law. In his defense, he cites the town’s property crime index rating, which is more than double the national average, and the epidemic of rapes, burglaries, thefts and assaults afflicting the community.

According to the Paragould Daily Press:

At a town hall meeting, last Thursday, Mayor Mike Gaskill and Police Chief Todd Stovall endorsed a plan to send police in SWAT gear and carrying AR-15s into downtown Paragould starting in 2013

“If you’re out walking, we’re going to stop you, ask why you’re out walking, check for your ID,” Chief Todd Stovall told the Paragould Daily Press.

 In Longmont, Colorado, a man who had just been released from jail on domestic violence charges gunned down his ex-girlfriend, her sister and her sister’s husband, and then killed himself.

According to the news report:

Weld County Sheriff John Cook said investigators searching the gunman’s home found the box the handgun had been sold in, but they did not find a receipt, and it was unclear when he bought it.

How’s that for effective gun control?

Meanwhile, in America’s most ineffective Congress ever, a law to protect women from domestic battery languishes because some Republicans don’t think Native Americans should be included. So Native American women deserve to be beaten up?

How can that be constitutional?

Violence in America is such an epidemic that officials in the various levels of government should hang their heads in shame. Everyone who has sworn to uphold the Constitution must face the fact that they have obviously failed to do so. They have let the Founding Fathers down and stained their country’s heritage with a flood of innocent blood – including that of little children and helpless housewives.
