‘What Goes Around’ To Come Around To Theaters This Summer

AUDIENCES WILL REAP WHAT WRITER/ DIRECTOR STEVE ‘TEHUT-NINE” MCALPIN HAS SOWN IN HIS NEW STAR-STUDDED RELATIONSHIP FILM

New York, NY (Ms. Raine Inc.): The age-old adage ‘you reap what you sow’ rings true for film director Steve “Tehut-Nine” McAlpin. The seeds sown with the street success of his films Foreign and last year’s lauded Bashment: The Fork in the Road, has reaped McAlpin enough acclaim to make his latest film What Goes Around, a worthy High Definition contender among the summer’s mainstream feature films.

McAlpin’s What Goes Around is a trek through the relationships of a conniving womanizer, his two sons, and a host of characters that stumble down a twisted corridor of love, lust, envy, betrayal, and deceit in this gripping and at times humorous tale that examines the complexities of male/female relationships. What Goes Around marks the acting debut of Dancehall’s reigning super star Mavado, who brings his hard-edged ‘gangsta fi life’ persona to the film’s sinister character known only as “Gully God.” The film also features recording artists KC Jockey, the late Rraw Dawg, and Flippa Mafia who with popular New York sound system selector Nohard “Noah” Grant (“Son-Son” in Bashment: The Fork in the Road) encumber lead roles alongside Sakina Samuda and Kim Goss. Other celebrity cast members include popular dancer Ding Dong, South Florida sound system selector Supa Twitch, and veteran Reggae singer Jackie Brown.

While his previous films focused on street-life of Jamaicans living in New York’s urban jungle, McAlpin chose to step out of the box, making a film that revolves less around violence and more around the ups and downs of love. What Goes Around was shot on location in South Florida, and Charlotte, NC.

“I didn’t want to make another stereotypical movie about violence among Jamaicans in Kingston or New York,” states McAlpin. “I wanted to do something that shows my range as a screen writer and director, while also showing a different aspect of Caribbean and African American culture and people.”

In a cruel twist of irony, one of What Goes Around’s stars, Alton “Rraw Dawg” Ashman, fell victim to the violence that McAlpin was trying to steer clear of documenting. Ashman was gunned down in Washington DC before filming for the movie wrapped. What Goes Around is dedicated to his memory.

Devastated by the loss of Ashman, McAlpin maintains that while “there are a few guns shown in the film, it isn’t a ‘shoot-em up’ type of film. There isn’t one shot fired in What Goes Around.”

Bent on breaking out of the very limited Caribbean market, McAlpin is positive that What Goes Around is the type of film that will catapult “Jamaican” or “Caribbean” films out of the Caribbean and into popular mainstream culture.

“This isn’t the kind of film that only Jamaicans can watch, it’s a movie about male/female relationships with a Jamaican edge,” McAlpin elaborates “and everyone, whether you are Jamaican, American, European, or African, can relate to the trials and tribulations of maintaining a relationship.”

Presented by McAlpin’s SunRASon Films in association with Johnny Blacks Entertainment and O-Don, What Goes Around is set to hit theaters Summer 2008.
