World Domino Championship Launched In New York

New York: “I would like to commend the organizers of the World Domino Champions for putting together a world class event. Much success and good luck to all the players” were some of the words of encouragement from New York State Assemblyman, Nick Perry, one of the guest speakers at the launch event for the second annual World Domino Championship of Champions slated for the Ramada Plaza Hotel, JFK, New York on August 31st to September 2nd 2007.

“It is a pleasure to join you here today and I hope to participate even as a spectator” Perry told the gathering.

Austin Hutchinson, President of the World Domino Promotions, Inc. (WDP), organizers of the championship, gave some historic perspective on the organization, disclosing that even though the WDP was only formally established two years ago, that the executive team had been promoting smaller domino events from as far back as 1993.

In terms of future plans, Hutchinson disclosed that the organization was “trying to revolutionize the game and promote worldwide participation and interest in dominos, with the expectation that very soon it would be included in future Olympics Games.”

Vice President, Curtis Dale, who spoke about rules of the game, explained that while the championship will not include the usual “slamming and jamming,” associated with recreational domino, he reiterated, “It will be lots of fun for all the players involved.”

This year’s ‘Championship of Champions’ tournament will feature some 200 teams and fourteen title-winners from international, national, and regional tournaments including players from Jamaica, England, Canada, Cayman Island, Spain and the USA. The champion team will be crowned ‘Champion of Champions’ and will take home a whopping US$50,000 from a championship purse of over US$100,000.

Among those attending the launch were sponsors Bob DeSouza, CEO, Trans Continental; Dennis Hawthorne, CEO, Dennis Shipping; Sabrina Hosang, Caribbean Foods Delight/Royal Caribbean; Irwine Claire, founder, Caribbean Immigrant Services; Clement Hume, Producer, Caribbean Lifestyle TV; Andrea Bullens, CEO, Bullzi Marketing/CIN TV; David Simon, President, Carib Vision TV and WDP Executive members Dolton Brown, Lincoln Hinds, Byron Brown, Robert Virgo, Lloyd Dixon, Neville Flowers and Senor Zoila, Spanish Coordinator.
